Local, committed experts

Karl Rush founded Creative Concrete in 2002, after 15 years of learning concrete work from his brother. That same year, he moved from Ventura to Paso Robles to enjoy the SLO County life. With roots in the community, he is committed to enhancing the quality of local living with artistic and solid workmanship.

Thirty-five years of experience have given Karl the ability and experience to assess any concrete project from drainage and erosion challenges to unique designs that reflect your personal taste, including the clay soils and hillside lots common throughout Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo County. Everything is based on the solid foundation of complying with national standards for the concrete industry and your satisfaction.

Over the years, we’ve completed projects throughout Paso Robles neighborhoods like Heritage Ranch, Running Deer Ranch, and Sierra Bonita Village, along with many others across the area. One of our largest projects to date is a driveway installation spanning approximately 10,000 to 11,000 square feet in Paso Robles. See images below of this project.

Beyond gray slabs

Decorative concrete has come a long way from plain gray slabs, thanks to advances in colorants, stamping, and design techniques. Creative Concrete has been surfing that artistic wave for over 35 years, bringing those techniques to homes throughout Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo County.

Based on the foundation of solid, concrete practices and installation, the Paso Robles concrete contractor is your leading, local choice for the concrete contractor that delivers:

  • Concrete driveways.
  • Concrete patios.

  • Decorative concrete designs and pathways.

  • Flatwork concrete, including foundations and slabs for RV and boat storage, garage, barn, and stable flooring.
  • Stacked block and decorative retaining walls.
  • Stamped concrete designs.

What Makes ‘Creative Concrete’ Work Different From Regular Concrete Work?

All of our projects are founded on solid concrete construction standards that meet OSHA rules, ACI building codes, ASTM materials testing, and local building and environmental regulations. We prepare the sites and pour concrete according to these standards and regulations. That’s the “regular concrete work” part.

The “creative concrete” part enters before we start pouring, and includes:

  • Discussing your vision. We ask questions about colors, designs, whether you want curved or straight driveways or pathways, and what your landscaping intentions are.
  • Creating a design based on your vision.
  • Explaining the steps we take to bring your vision to life.

We view your project as a blank canvas that we can jointly turn into a masterpiece painting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide concrete contractor services in Atascadero, CA?

Yes. Creative Concrete regularly serves homeowners throughout Atascadero, from driveways and patios to decorative stacked block retaining walls. Karl and his crew know the area well and are happy to visit your property for a free, no-obligation quote.

How do I take care of my new concrete driveway?

We provide detailed care instructions for all of our projects. For driveways, the general care instructions include:

  • Keeping pets, kids, and others off the wet concrete.
  • No parking on the driveway for 7 to 10 days, longer if possible. Concrete can take up to 28 days to completely cure.
  • Sealing the driveway, which takes place about 30 days, and is included in our contract with you.

As mentioned, we will go over the instructions with you, and you are encouraged to call us if you have questions.

How do you handle drainage challenges on a sloped or graded driveway?

Drainage is one of the most important factors in a successful driveway project, especially on the graded and sloped lots common throughout Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo County. On one driveway project, a challenging lot grade required directing water away from the foundation. We solved it by raising the height of the driveway on one side and creating a swale that redirects water safely toward the street. Every driveway we build is designed with proper drainage in mind from the start.

Are stacked wall blocks an easy way to make a retaining wall?

Stacked wall block systems, like Allan Block, work well for light to moderate applications such as raised garden beds, terraced landscaping, and shorter retaining walls that add structure and definition to a yard.

For taller walls or steeper slopes, more engineering is involved. The purpose of a retaining wall is to control erosion by stabilizing a slope, and the deeper the angle of the slope, the more reinforcement is needed. Simply stacking wall blocks won’t hold back the force of a hillside on its own, especially past the angle of repose, the point at which a graded slope’s natural erosion becomes a risk to nearby structures or roads.

Creative Concrete specializes in decorative stacked block retaining walls and can help you determine whether a stacked block system fits your project. For larger structural retaining walls beyond that scope, we’ll point you toward the right resources to keep your project safe and up to code.

Can you help us design a concrete deck for our swimming pool?

Yes. Custom-designed concrete swimming pool decks are a popular enhancement to backyard, in-ground pools. We can help you design everything about the deck, from shape to color and patterns.

Do I need a permit for a new driveway or walkway?

Typically, yes, for both the County of San Luis Obispo and incorporated cities. Once your design is complete, we can assist you with reaching out to the appropriate regulatory agency to get your permit.

Can you build a retaining wall on a hillside property in Atascadero?

Many Atascadero properties sit on sloped or hillside lots, and a well-built stacked block retaining wall can add structure, prevent minor erosion, and shape a terraced garden or yard. Creative Concrete specializes in decorative stacked block systems for these applications. For steeper slopes that require full structural engineering, we will let you know upfront and point you toward the right resources so your project stays safe and up to code.

Can you take over a project another contractor started or abandoned?

Yes. We’ve completed projects that another contractor started and then abandoned. Homeowners often choose us because other companies don’t return calls, don’t show up when they say they will, or don’t follow through on what they promised. We’re prompt with estimates and reliable from the first call to the finished job.

Do you provide a written contract for every job?

Yes. Every project receives a written contract outlining the scope of work, pricing, and payment schedule before we begin.

Do you take on rush jobs or same-week concrete work?

We do our best to accommodate rush jobs whenever possible, depending on our schedule and whether another project can be adjusted to fit your timeline.

Do you work on rental or investment properties?

Yes. We’ve completed residential concrete work for individual property owners as well as property management companies.

What type of concrete mix do you use for driveways and patios?

We use a ¾ inch rock mix rather than the thinner 3/8 inch pea gravel mix some contractors rely on. The larger rock makes the concrete structurally stronger, reduces the chance of shrinkage cracking, and helps eliminate surface pop-outs. It takes more effort from our finishing crew, but it delivers a longer-lasting result for your driveway or patio.

What are the steps involved in a concrete driveway or patio project?

Every project follows the same core process: preparing and compacting the base material, placing rebar reinforcement, saturating the sub base before the pour to help control the cure, pouring and finishing the concrete, tamping to properly seat the aggregate below the surface, and applying a curing compound afterward to support a slow, even cure.

How long does a typical concrete driveway or patio project take?

Project timelines vary depending on the size, scope, and weather conditions. We’ll walk you through a project-specific timeline as part of your estimate.

What are the sand base, rebar, and slab thickness specifications for a concrete driveway?

For sidewalks, we place 2 inches of compactable sand as a base. For driveways and patios, we use 2 inches of Class II road base for added strength under vehicle loads. A standard 4 inch slab is reinforced with number 3 rebar set 24 inches on center.
